June Recap

Life lately
I keep saying this but seriously, how is it the end of June already? I've been spending my birthday month indulging in shopping, desserts and much-needed friend (and alone) time. So even though some parts of my life have been very stressful lately, there have definitely been some bright spots through it all. And right now, I want to focus on that. Well that, the fact that it's Friday, and tomorrow is my actual birthday which I'll be spending with one of my best friends.

Book Reviews

Read but not reviewed
  • Bad for You (Dirty Deeds, #3) by J. Daniels - 2 stars; I love a redemption story and I liked the two main characters to a certain degree but it got to a point where they came across more like caricatures than actual people who felt real to me. The dialogue didn't help in that department either which is a shame because I did like the premise of the story, just not how it was done.
  • Wicked Fox (Gumiho, #1) by Kat Cho - 3.5 stars; I went to Kat Cho's book launch this past week and she's so charming and eloquent. I wasn't familiar with Korean mythology before reading this but I loved how she incorporated it and her culture in the present day to give us this well-paced, fun paranormal fantasy. There's going to be a book 2 and I plan to read it!
  • Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens - 5 stars; I bought this book and waited to read it for the same reasons -- I was afraid of the hype. But trust me when I say it's well-deserved. I couldn't get this book out of my head after finishing. Certain moments straight up gave me chills and her writing is beautiful and atmospheric to the point where I'd forget I was reading in the middle of a noisy work cafeteria. I can't recommend it enough.
  • Beautiful Stranger (Beautiful Bastards, #2) by Christina Lauren - 3 stars; I didn't like this one quite as much as the first book and I think it's because I didn't feel as connected to their individual personalities or romance. It was still entertaining though and I'm planning to read the rest of the series.
  • Lovely War by Julie Berry - 5 stars; I was this close to naming this as my favorite read for June and honestly, it's practically tied. I bought this on the strong recommendation of my dear friend Alexa and she did not steer me wrong. The narrative was unique and compelling and I consider this a must-read for 2019.
