Style Essentials: Travel Edition

Today's post isn't exactly about style but it's definitely about the essentials. Specifically what I need during a flight. But in case you're curious about what I wear – I'm all about comfort and my travel uniform consists of: either jeans or leggings, a flowy top, a cardigan in case it's cold and flats.

Most of my friends and family have, at one point, made the assumption I overpacked for my vacations. That is, until they took a trip with me or dropped me off at the airport and realized that was far from being the case. I love traveling light! Especially when I started traveling alone and had to carry everything myself. I'm usually good with carry-on luggage and a big purse to put under my seat. So what I wanted to share are the essentials I carry in my bag to get me through a flight, happily and comfortably.

Bag / Headphones / iPad mini cover / Portable charger / Socks / Notebook / Camera

Longchamp bag | I've had this bag (the large and small version) for a very long time and either one or both of them have accompanied me on most of my trips. This is the purse I use 99% of the time on the plane and I can't recommend it enough. It's cute and functional.

iPad + Book | I love reading on the plane! There's absolutely no distractions and on a flight from NJ to Cali, for example, I usually read two books (that's just one way). So I make sure to come prepared with my iPad mini and depending on my TBR, at least one actual book as well.

Notebook & Pen | I can't guarantee that I'll actually use the notebook I bring with me but I feel like I always need one in case I have notes/ideas and my phone dies.

Noise canceling headphones | It took me a while to finally take the plunge and buy these and it was absolutely worth it. Plus it gives off an obvious "please leave me alone" vibe.

Camera | As much as I love taking pictures on my iPhone, I still bring my Instax Neo with me on trips. But now that I have a Sony A6000 mirrorless camera, I'll be bringing this instead.

Make-up + toiletries | I always put my makeup in my purse vs. my luggage. It's just easier to reach for a quick touch-up on the plane or at the airport. Same goes for toiletries like lotion, facial mist, lip balm, etc.

Socks | Sometimes it's nice to slip off your flats and change into some comfy socks for a long flight.

Portable charger | The last thing I need is my phone dying on me when I need to text someone.

Pillow | It's weird because I can fall asleep on the bus, no problems whatsoever. On a plane? Not so much but.. a pillow helps.

Snack | I usually bring candy or a small bag of cookies when I inevitably crave something sweet.

  1. I have probs traveling light.... but definitely learned to do better when I had to go on some trips where I was taking public transportation to. I've been used to driving everywhere, which allows for a lot more over-packing! Visiting NYC was definitely a wake-up call because OMG my suitcases were SO heavy dragging them up so many blocks!

  2. These are definitely all of my travel essentials as well! (Seriously, it's like we're the same person.) But I definitely carry all of these things on the trips I take, especially when it's going to be an overseas jaunt. And I really prefer packing light, even if I do have a suitcase that I'm checking in! Makes it easier on me, since I've been on my own for most of my trips and have to wrangle my suitcase myself.

  4. One of my must haves on trips is my iPod. I have to have music. I also have a cheap prepay card phone that I bring and leave my good phone home. If it gets lost or more likely dropped (I have done this twice while hurrying during travel), no big deal. I bring my 7" Kindle Fire tablet now because it is a lot lighter than my Fire HD (and cheaper in case I lose it). I also bring my ancient first generation little grey Kindle reader, just in case the Fire runs out of juice. :)
