BDB Party: Playlist!

The Black Dagger Brotherhood Party is an awesome week-long celebration that AlexaKelly & I are hosting to share our love of this series and these vampires with all of you. Expect fun posts from each of us, collaborative posts and mini-reviews from me and Alexa, who are first-time BDB readers! You can also chat with us about the books, the characters and anything BDB-related on Twitter, by using the hashtag #BDBparty.

This party would not be complete without music! One of the many things I noticed while reading this series was the brothers' (and the author's) love of music. Particularly, rap music. Almost all the rappers and bands below are mentioned throughout the books (with the exception of two). But I picked the songs I liked best and felt were the most fitting.

Listen below and read why I chose these songs!

2Pac - Ambitionz Az A Ridah
I'm pretty sure this line describes all the brothers: "I won't deny it, I'm a straight ridah / You don't wanna f*ck with me."

Jay-Z - Dirt Off Your Shoulder
This made me think of how the brothers take matters into their own hands and even though they're bound by their warrior blood to protect, this is what they want to do: "I probably owe it to you all, proud to be locked by the force / Trying to hustle some things, that go with the Porsche / Feeling no remorse, feeling like my hand was forced / Middle finger to the law."

The Notorious B.I.G. - Hypnotize
The brothers never lose: "Never lose, never choose to, bruise crews who / Do something to us, talk go through us."

Ludacris - Rollout (My Business)
As soon as I saw glock I knew I was going to pick this one: "I got my twin glock .40s, cocked back / Me and my homies, so drop that."

50-Cent - Baby By Me
I can't say I'm a huge 50-Cent fan or anything but I've always liked this song and this lyric seemed very fitting: "First it's her neck, yeah then her back / Yeah I'm a freak, I get into all that."

Eminem - Cinderella Man
V loves this song but the first two lines easily applies to every character, brother or heroine, in this series: "You know, technically, I'm not even really supposed to be here right now / So fuck it, might as well make the most of it." None of them expected to end up where they are, but they're living life and loving it, no matter how hard it gets.

Nine Inch Nails - Only
This song made me think of Phury and how he made up the wizard to hurt his psyche but really, all the brothers have inner demons: "I just made you up to hurt myself, yeah / And I just made you up to hurt myself  And it worked / Yes it did!"

Nirvana - Lithium
Reminded me most of Z and Phury: "I'm so lonely, but that's okay, I shaved my head / And I'm not sad and just maybe I'm to blame for all I've heard / But I'm not sure / I'm so excited, I can't wait to meet you there / But I don't care / I'm so horny, but that's okay / My will is good."

Bullet For My Valentine - Bittersweet Memories
I originally looked up Bullet For My Valentine songs because Manny (Dr. Manello) mentioned them as a band he liked but the song I found made me think of Xhex: "I wanna run 'n' escape from your prison / But when I leave I feel something is missing / ... / You're like a drug that I can't stop taking / I want more and I can't stop craving."

G-Unit - Wanna Get To Know You
This is for the ladies. Because I'm pretty sure all the brothers drove them crazy (in a good way) with their lovin'! "I wanna be your lover / I wanna get to know you, baby / One dose of my lovin' / I'm really gonna drive you crazy."

Kanye West - Runaway
All the brothers (except maybe Tohr) claim not to be good for their women but at the same time, they know they need their shellans and these lyrics made me think of that: "Never was much of a romantic / I could never take the intimacy / And I know I did damage / Cause the look in your eyes is killing me / I guess you are at an advantage / Cause you can blame me for everything / And I don't know how I'mma manage / If one day you just up and leave."

James Blake - To The Last
This is for Tohr and John Matthew: "You're to me than any any son / Never in a fore and only son / And I will love you / Tell me if we're wrong / All I've seen is what you've done / To the last, you and I."

  1. While I wouldn't normally listen to a lot of rap music, I started paying more attention after my cousin recommended a couple of tracks and I started reading BDB. This is a great playlist together, and it really suits the books too!

  2. I know I'm like 3 years late but I have a few songs that I think are perfect for BDB and wanted to share them. Two of them are by Halestorm. The first one is "Innocence" for JM and Xhex's first time:
Is this what you wanted / Did I make your dreams come true
You're sitting in a corner / Wondering what you got into
And you ache for this /You don't understand
That your tears don't mean a thing
And I only come When you scream
    And I told you
    Child don't follow me home
You're just too perfect for my hands to hold
If you choose to stay You'll throw it all away
And I just want to take Your innocence
The second one is "I'm Not an Angel" and I think it really suits Blay and Qhuinn: I should have told you to leave
'Cause I knew all the time you couldn't handle me
But you're hard to resist When you're on your knees
    Begging me
I'll tear you down, I'll make you bleed eternally
Can't help myself from hurting you when it's hurting me
And the last one is called Scream by Avenged Sevenfold (Yes, the band that Manny threatens to upload in V's stereo in Lover Unleashed) and I can totally picture this song on the background of one of V's BDSM sessions.
Relax while you're closing your eyes to me
So warm as I'm setting you free
With your arms by your side there's no struggling
    Pleasure's all mine this time
You know I make you wanna scream
You know I make you wanna run from me baby
But know it's too late you've wasted all your time
