Adventures in Anime #4: Kamisama Kiss

Adventures in Anime is a collaborative feature I have with Alexa Loves Books! The idea is simple – we watch anime together and then we answer 6 questions about what we enjoyed most. We'll do our best to keep it spoiler-free but we will be mentioning our favorites so keep that in mind!

I'll be honest the first episode of Kamisama Kiss had me slightly worried but there was no need, it immediately hit its stride and I ended up falling in love with the series! It's about a girl named Nanami Momozono who just wants to be a regular high school girl but instead she's homeless after years of her father's gambling debts finally catches up to them. He's MIA though and as Nanami wanders around trying to figure out what to do, she rescues a man being chased by a dog. She doesn't realize this at the time but he is Mikage, a land god of the Mikage Shrine, and when he offers his home to her in gratitude, he also transfers the role of land god to her as well. Which she doesn't find out until she gets to said shrine and meets Tomoe, a yokai and soon-to-be her familiar. Together they work to bring the shrine back to its former glory and along the way, it shouldn't be a surprise that feelings begin to blossom between them too, which Tomoe tries to resist (silly yokai!). I loved the story and the characters. It was the perfect balance of lightheartedness (I laughed a lot), drama and sweet moments that I really needed at the time. I definitely recommend watching it and if I had to name one complaint, it would just be that 2 seasons wasn't nearly enough! I'm totally keeping my fingers crossed for a season 3.

For each of these posts, we will answer these questions!

Favorite character(s)

I loved Nanami and Tomoe! Nanami didn't ask for the role of Land God but she embraces it (with some hiccups) and genuinely wants to right by the shrine and all those around her. I admired her kindness, big heart, and the way she stood by Tomoe. Tomoe has a complicated past and can be a bit of curmudgeon, which makes his protective, sweet moments all the more swoonworthy.

Favorite episode
Season 1, Episode 13 "I've Started The 'Being A God' Thing" (season 1 finale!)

Favorite scene
There's a scene at the end of the Season 1, Episode 13 where Nanami and Tomoe re-seal their familiar contract and it made me so happy.

Favorite quote
I feel like this line doesn't sound great out of context but in the moment, I remember cheering Nanami on for having the courage and the patience to wait for what she wanted: "I don’t care if you won’t see me that way. Because I’ll make you see me that way." I also like this line by Kurama: "Human lives are short, so if you want to tell them something, you need to tell them, or you'll wind up losing the chance to do it forever."

Favorite setting
The Mikage Shrine! Thanks to Nanami it became a home and a place that people can go to.

Bonus! Favorite kiss
I am going to sound like a broken record but see my answers for favorite episode and scene.

  1. I'm really happy that the series we ended up picking out on a whim ended up becoming one we both really enjoyed! Plus, it was definitely a good one to watch while we were working through the initial stress and anxiety of COVID and adjusting to an entirely new routine too. Still hoping for a third season!
