Iceland, Part 3: Good food, the zoo and our last day in Reykjavik

Our last two days in Iceland! On Thursday, Alexa or I would randomly say, "can you believe it's our last full day here?" and the other would immediately say stop talking about it. I really can't say enough how fun every single day of the trip was. And while our last day was more laid back, it wasn't any less awesome.

Day 5
We lucked out with really nice weather (and by nice I mean still cold but sunny and less windy), which was perfect because we spent most of the day walking. We first headed to Cafe Paris for breakfast (our original plan was The Laundromat Cafe but turns out it's closed!).

After breakfast, we headed to Husdyragardurinn Zoo to see Icelandic horses! This was at the top of our list of must-see's and honestly, I could barely contain my excitement. The zoo was on the smaller side but we saw sea lions, reindeer (!), cows, minks, goats and of course, horses! They had three and we made a point to visit each one but the dark brown horse was my favorite.

After the zoo, we went back to the downtown Reykjavik and started shopping. The two streets, Skólavörðustígur and Laugavegur, are practically all stores and restaurants so it was the perfect place to pick up souvenirs for family, friends and ourselves. And to stop for lunch at Cafe Babalu after we were (mostly) done. The cafe was so cute and eclectic! We both the got special which was a grilled cheese sandwich with tomato soup, which was delicious.

We continued to walk around and shop more but eventually all the walking we did started to catch up to us so we made a last minute decision to see if there was a library nearby and there was! It was nice to sit down, find out if they had our favorite books, admire their surprisingly huge manga collection and just relax for a bit.

After the library, we realized we needed to get ice cream (yes, need!). A quick Google search led us to Eldur & Is, where I got marshmallow and stracciatella. Then we went back to the room to drop off everything we bought, which turned into us laying out all our purchases and packing up most of our stuff (to make sure it all fit!). From there we headed to Snaps for our last dinner in Reykjavik. When I was doing research this place was highly rated and it was easy to see why as soon as we entered. Despite having a nearly full house, we were able to wait comfortably downstairs by the bar and start off with drinks. Then I ordered mussels (my favorite) and Alexa got pasta and of course, we shared dessert. I highly recommend going here! But I also feel that way about everywhere we ate.

Day 6
Our actual last day! Goodness, this was so sad. Neither of us were ready to leave and even though we knew this was going to be a fun trip, it really exceeded just about all our expectations. We went to Prikid again for breakfast, checked out on time and dragged our much heavier suitcases to the bus stop to head over to the airport. Luckily, we're both fans of getting there early and we spent the extra time duty free shopping and eating lunch. Then before we knew it, it was time to board the plane and head back to New Jersey.
