Table for Two #14: Caracas Arepa Bar

For this month's Table for Two, I'll be chatting about Caracas Arepa Bar and Alexa is featuring Snowdays.

After going to Caracas Arepa Bar with a coworker over 6 years ago (!), it became one of my go-to recommendations to friends. But in all this time, I’ve gone back only once and honestly, I can’t even remember when exactly that was. Clearly, it was time to go back which is why I suggested it for this month’s Table for Two.

In a lot of ways, it’s just like I remembered. It’s a hole-in-the-wall with limited seating but its authenticity gives the place an overall cozy feel. We were at a very small table for two (pun not intended!) which was a tad difficult since we had two huge winter coats on and multiple bags (cause um, books!). But we made it work and the quick service more than made up for it. We ordered:

  • De Pabellon - Shredded beef, black beans, white salty cheese and sweet plantains | Messy but yummy and filling
  • Playa Deluxe - Pan-seared tilapia with garlic-infused oil, sautéed mushrooms, avocado slices, onions and herb mayo | Surprisingly light but flavorful and significantly less messy
  • La del Gato - Guayanese cheese, fried sweet plantains and avocado slices | This was Alexa’s favorite of the two she got
  • La Pelua - Shredded beef with cheddar cheese | The other one she got which she liked but the cheese was overwhelming

I always order two arepas thinking I’ll be able to finish it and it’s never happened. I should stick with one and just order sides! I guess that means I’ll have to go back and clearly this means you should try out this place too.

You can find Caracas Arepa Bar at 91 E. 7th St.

Alexa of Alexa Loves Books and I have teamed up to bring you Table for Two, a collaboration that involves two of our favorite things - New York City and food. The two of us will be highlighting restaurants and dessert spots in New York City. You'll be hearing our personal opinions on the place and the food, as well as where you can go to try it out for yourself.
