What I've Watched | The Gifted, The Crown, and Fringe

On cold days like the ones we've had lately, there's nothing better than sitting on your couch binge-watching a TV show. (Although, let's be real – I do this all year round.) Here's what I've been watching lately.

The Gifted

This is probably my favorite new show from 2017! I had been curious about The Gifted when it first came out but didn’t start watching until weeks after it debuted. (Hearing Macky, Alexa’s husband, rave about it on Twitter is what convinced me to check it out!).  I binged the first three episodes and was hooked. It’s by no means a perfect show but I love the cast (I was already a Jamie Chung fan; now I’m majorly crushing on Sean Teale).

It’s set in the X-Men world but focuses on much lesser-known mutants and on the obstacles they face in a society that hates them. Even though I enjoy the X-Men movies, I love the approach this show decided to take. It’s more about family, the ones by blood and the ones you create, while still having action and cool scenes that showcase their mutant powers. I also love all the little X-Men call-outs and throwbacks. It was just announced that they got a Season 2 and I, for one, cannot wait!

The Crown

Claire Foy and Matt Smith, especially the former, continue to be magnificent in The Crown. I’m so impressed by how they inhabit Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, even when they frustrate me in different ways. Actually, in general I found this season to be kind of frustrating because it didn’t focus enough on Elizabeth, in my opinion. Things kept happening to her and I wanted to see her be more proactive. I think that’s why the episodes about the Queen’s Christmas message (and how that came about) as well as the final episode were my favorites. We got to see both Elizabeth’s fire and her vulnerable side. In comparison, I know a lot of people will say that Margaret’s romance was the best part of season 2 but I just don’t care about her or maybe it’s the way she’s portrayed. She opens her mouth and all I hear is whine, whine, whine. (That goes for Prince Philip 90% of the time too.) But Claire Foy? I am going to miss her next season.

Fringe

Fringe is one of my all-time very shows and it’s not an exaggeration to say that I’ve seen every single episode at least twice, if not thrice. It’s probably because every few years I make a point to rewatch the whole series, which is exactly what I’m doing right now (currently in the middle of season 3). From the pilot I was immediately reminded of why I fell in love with the show, even though it’s really as it progresses that the characters come into their own and the storylines become much tighter. It’s just such an underrated sci-fi show. Olivia Dunham is driven by the need to find the truth and do what’s right and later by the relationships she forms with Peter and Walter (and Astrid). They become this unconventional little family delving all sorts of weird science. But at the heart of the show is the father/son relationship between Peter and Walter. You all know my love of Joshua Jackson but really, John Noble is the person who blows me away the most on this show.

  1. I still haven't watched any episodes of The Crown! I've been meaning to (mostly for Matt Smith), but seeing your thoughts on this second season has rekindled my interest even more.
