Adult - Urban Fantasy
It's been a while since I've gotten sucked into an urban fantasy series that wasn't written by J.R. Ward or Karen Marie Moning. But Anne Bishop, you can consider me a fan. Written in Red throws you into the story and the characters with very little preamble but the gaps get filled in quickly enough and it wasn't before long that I got my bearings and found myself along for the ride. Meg Corbyn is a cassandra sangue, a blood prophet who can see visions of the future when her skin is cut. But her kind are treated more like property than people by their controllers so Meg flees. And somehow finds herself at Lakeside Courtyard, a property owned by the Others, and asking to be their new Human Liasion. The Others are the dominant race who co-habit this world with humans and can be anything from shapeshifters (not just werewolves), vampires, faeries and more. The leader of the courtyard is shapeshifter Simon Wolfgard (note the last name) and against his better judgement, he gives Meg the job even though he senses there's more to her than meets the eye.

It's a dark and dangerous world which is why I was surprised to find myself chuckling at scenes and engrossed in the relationships Meg forms with everyone. First of all, Meg is just awesome. After being caged for so long, having a life of her own is new to her. It makes her reactions to situations both endearing and impressive, especially as she comes face-to-face with Others. Likewise, the author does a great job of giving the Others depth. We get to know each new person as individuals and through Meg's eyes. And lastly, Simon. It's clearly the beginning of an epic slow burn romance and I'm already in love with where it's going. Their relationship and the one she has with another character are my favorites.

The book ends on a solid note and while it was a tad too long, I enjoyed it so much that I immediately put the second book on hold at the library and bought a copy of Written in Red for myself!

  1. I'm so happy that we both really enjoyed WRITTEN IN RED! It was definitely not my usual type of fantasy read, but I'm glad I now have a new series to devour. Eventually. When my TBR is not trying to kill me in my sleep >.<
