Capeside Revisited: Pacey + Joey Meets YA

A couple months ago, I teamed up with Emery Lord to talk about our love of Dawson's Creek and the response was overwhelming! So many fellow Dawson's Creek fans tweeted me and I thought to myself, I should do another DC-related post. Then I had an even better idea: I should ask the lovely ladies I chatted with the most about DC – Estelle, Andi, Alex and Tiff – to join me for a week-long celebration since we still felt very passionately about the show. And that's how Capeside Revisited came to be!

We're kicking things off today on Hello, Chelly, then jumping around to the other blogs over the next few days as they share their posts and come backing here to do a roundtable of our favorites (yes, I was evil and made them choose things like favorite episode!).

Now, onto my post!

When I was in high school, and honestly still to this day, if you were to ask me what my ultimate OTP is, I would say Pacey and Joey from Dawson's Creek. They were the couple that never should've been, even though they made so much sense. But it just seemed destined that Dawson would get the girl, not his best friend Pacey. Then the show did something totally crazy -- they let Pacey and Joey have a chance. Even as platonic friends, I enjoyed all their moments. I always sensed an understanding between them (given their mutual less than ideal home lives) beneath all the banter. And let's be honest, those scenes were a huge part of what made their relationship so awesome. You just had to read between the banter. (See what I did there?)

I absolutely fell in love with their relationship and the slow way it evolved from friendship to something more. It felt natural, earned and like a long-time coming. These two basically set the standard for my favorite type of romances: the ones that start off all antagonistic but deep down we know they're fighting an attraction and falling in love.

For my post, I thought it would be fun to pair 10 of my favorite Pacey/Joey moments with YA books.

1x10 Double Date | Pushing the Limits by Katie McGarry
When Joey is forced to tutor Pacey, they end up enjoying each other's company more than they expected. Unfortunately, it just wasn't the right time for them but in Noah and Echo's case, their tutoring sessions are the beginning of something beautiful.

3x12 Weekend in the Country | The Fine Art of Pretending by Rachel Harris
After being friends (who argued a lot) for years, this is the moment Pacey realizes he's in love with Joey as he watches her sleep by the fire. In the book, Alyssa and Brandon are best friends and when they pretend to be a couple, he realizes he may feel a lot more for her than just friendship.

3x16 To Green, With Love | The Summer of Chasing Mermaids by Sarah Ockler
Pacey buys Joey a wall and she tells him how he constantly challenges her in a way no one else does. Christian does the same thing for Elyse, at a time when she really needed someone to be there for her like that.

3x18 Neverland | Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout
A hot first kiss that ends in yelling and outrage? I immediately thought of Daemon and Katy from Obsidian. Their bickering reminds me so much of Pacey and Joey!

3x20 Longest Day | Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare
This is the moment the love triangle between Pacey, Joey and Dawson came to a head. I thought of Clockwork Angel because Will, Tessa and Jem are in a similar position. The boys are best friends and they all love each other very much.

3x22 The Anti-Prom | Something Like Normal by Trish Doller
I love that moment when Pacey tells Joey he remembers everything. It isn't quite the same when Harper tells Travis she remembers him and promptly punches him in the face. But the chemistry between them is so there

3x23 True Love | The Book of Broken Hearts by Sarah Ockler
Some people sail away on a boat and others ride off into the sunset on a motorcycle.

4x14 Winter Tale | My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick
Both couples are young and in high school. But they're also both very much in love and responsible about their relationship and taking that next step.

6x15 Castaways | Open Road Summer by Emery Lord
They're stuck inside K-Mart all night and Joey shaves off Pacey's beard (leading for a much anticipated kiss!). In ORS, Reagan and Matt are "stuck" on tour together all summer and one of my favorite moments is when she cuts his hair.

6x24 ... Must Come to an End | How to Love by Katie Cotugno
Pacey tells Joey loving her is enough and that he can let her go but she's finally ready to stop running. These same two feelings are expressed by Sawyer and Reena as they get their second chance at love.

Hope you enjoyed my P/J and YA pairings!

  1. And now I want to go home and watch ALL the Joey and Pacey moment over and over again. Actually they should just come out with a Pacey and Joey DVD set.

  2. I loved the K-Mart episode!! I definitely wanted Joey and Pacey to get together... because well, I love Joshua Jackson. I also really liked how you compared them sailing off on True Love to the Book of Broken Hearts motorcycle riding off.... so cute!!
