Flat-Out Love came out before the phrase "New Adult" had really taken off but it's exactly how I imagined the genre would be like (before it got all stereotype-y and overly dramaticized - albeit still entertaining!). It's about Julie who is 18 years old, starting her freshmen year at college, smart and comfortable in her own skin. She's away from home for the first time and when her dorm plans fall through, she finds herself staying with her mom's college best friend's family. The family is a little dysfunctional (to put it mildly) and while Julie doesn't know how or why that is, she rolls with the punches and fits right in. She particularly bonds with the kids -- Matt, who is a few years older than her and Celeste, a very bright but socially awkward child. There's romance, humor, friendship, family, growing up and more. It's not a book that has gotten a lot of attention but it should! Part of the reason why I'm thinking about this book again is because I just read
Flat-Out Celeste, which is a companion novel that came out recently. It reminded me of how much I love these characters and their stories. If you want something a little older than high school with a lot of heart and memorable characters - check this one out!
I still haven't read this! But I know that you and Mel both really liked it, so that definitely has to count for something, if you ask me.
