RACHEL • "Hello My Old Heart" by The Oh Hello's
I was working and listening to Spotify radio at the same time when this song by The Oh Hello's came on. I don't know if it was the simple melody or the guitar that made me notice it but by the time I heard those first lines -- "hello my old heart, how have you been? are you still there inside my chest?" -- I had pretty much stopped everything I was doing to just listen. It's been a while since I've let myself soak in a song and its lyrics. What can I say? I'm a sucker for songs that deal with broken hearts. But don't be fooled, it's surprisingly happy sounding. It starts off somewhat melancholy but slowly builds until it's upbeat and there's all this clapping. (Oh man, I'm also a sucker for songs with clapping.) I hope this song catches your attention the way it did mine. Enjoy!
CARINA • "Punching in a Dream" by The Naked and Famous
When I first heard front-woman Alisa Xayalith's haunting and angst-ridden voice on this track, I was immediately hooked and the 80's synth pop sound was the cherry on top. The lyrics "like punching in a dream breathing life into my nightmare" makes me think about the fear of personal obstacles getting in the way of your dreams - breathing life into your nightmares. That has been my fear recently which The Naked and Famous aptly put into song. I'd like to hear your interpretation so hit play and let us know what you think!
