2020: Movies, Music & TV

I'm probably going to be saying this every day for the next two weeks but how is it the end of 2020 already?! I can't believe how quickly time has flown in spite of everything. But here we are and I'm kicking off my usual round of annual posts with my favorite songs, TV shows, and movies from this past year.

Most listened-to songs
I've said this before but I don't completely trust Spotify's end of years stats so I rely on my favorite music tracker last.fm to help me put together this list! Here's what I realized about my 2020 listening habits:

... that I was really obsessed with the soundtrack from Little Voice
... my #1 song was ily (i love you baby) by Surf Mesa
... my #2 was Does She by Yuna, which I basically haven't stopped listening to since I saw her perform it live in February
... I still favor upbeat and catchy songs and honestly, I needed that vibe more than ever this year
... I really enjoy a good cover (see Creep, I Love You's, Valerie, and ily)
... that I love contemporary country (only two songs made it on here but I know I listen to it a lot)
... even when Ariana Grande releases an album late in the year, one of her songs still made it on this list!

Top TV shows
I've always been a TV show binger and I certainly had a lot more time to do so this year!

Best of new-to-me shows | Little Voice, The Baby-Sitters Club, The Originals, Cobra Kai, Fruits Basket

Must-watch mini-series | Little Fires Everywhere, Unorthodox, The Queen's Gambit

Surprisingly entertaining | High Fidelity, Once Upon a Time (first three seasons were a rewatch but everything else I hadn't seen before!), Dash & Lily, Kamisama Kiss, Virgin River

Oldies that still rocked | The Crown (S4), Umbrella Academy (S2), The Mandalorian (S2), Grey's Anatomy (S17!), This Is Us (S5), Burden of Truth (S3), The Boys (S2)

Special shoutout | Sailor Moon! I rewatched (although the last two season were new to me) the entire series and all the movies with Alexa and it was so much fun. Totally renewed my love for it.

Necessary "worst of 2020" mention | Selena: The Series, Emily in Paris (but visually, I loved it because Paris!)

Top Movies
Over the years, I've noticed that the only movies I really make an effort to watch are either Marvel or Star Wars related which is a far cry from the movie buff I used to be during college and when I first graduated. With the extra down time I really made it a point to watch more movies and I'm proud to say I actually saw about 15 new-to-me movies but only 5 made the cut!

To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You • This was one of my most anticipated movies of the year and it did not disappoint! It's just so enjoyable and wholesome plus Lana Condor continues to be amazing as Lara Jean. I can't wait to watch the final installment!

Little Women • I kept meaning to watch this and after my best friend told me how good it was, I knew I had to finally make time for it and I'm so glad I did. Saoirse Ronan was fantastic as Jo and I totally understood the hype around Timothée Chalamet after seeing him in this role. This was also the one and only adaptation where I didn't hate Amy.

Knives Out • I honestly wouldn't have given this movie a second thought if my cousin hadn't kept telling me to watch it. It felt like a modern day Clue (I feel like I'm showing my age here but I used to love that movie!) and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Secretariat • I absolutely love the movie selection on Disney+ and when I saw this pop up, I knew I had to watch. I'm already a sucker for feel-good sports movies (which is hilarious because I'm not into sports) but throw horses into the mix, and I was just enthralled. This was so well-done!

Black Beauty • Yes, another horse movie! But it's not my fault that Disney decided to remake this and release it on Disney+. I watched it a couple weekends ago and while I know I'm in the minority, I loved it! It follows pretty much every "horse girl" trope but you know what? I like that trope! It's beautifully shot and I think the underlying message of treating animals well and realizing they have feelings too really came across.

  2. Knives Out was such a pleasant surprise! I watched that one with Mel & Steven, and we all had a lot of fun. Also really enjoyed P.S. I Still Love You and Little Women too!
