2017: Movies, Music & TV

Christmas has passed and now it's five days until the New Year?! This is just so, so crazy to me. But here we are and now it's time to spend the rest of the week sharing my "best of" posts and a reflection on 2017. To kick things off, I'm going to start with my favorite songs, TV shows and movies.

Most-Played Songs
I have to say overall, my most-played songs surprised me! It surprised me in the sense that it was mostly dance-y songs (which I admittedly do love) but I gravitate more towards rock, indie and singer-songwriter type music. In other words, this means no new bands came out in 2017 that I know of and fell in love with. (I need to fix this in 2018.) But that said, I wasn't totally shocked by everything on here.

I 100% expected to see Paramore, Selena Gomez, NEIKED, LANY and Maren Morris given how many times I had their songs on repeat.

I did not realize how much Drake, J Balvin and Shakira I had been listening to but these songs never fail to make me want to dance.

Black Jack, Niall Horan and Maroon 5 were unexpected but welcomed additions.

Top TV Shows
I have to say, it's been a pretty memorable year of TV shows and this is coming from someone who admittedly watches a lot – whether it's live or on Netflix / Hulu. But I made the commitment to binge a couple shows with 5+ seasons (Dr. Who and Inuyasha!), said goodbye to long-time favorites (Orphan Black and Broadchurch) and discovered new obsessions (I'm looking at you, The Gifted!). Then of course, there are my tried and true shows which continue to entertain me (Grey's Anatomy forever y'all).

Here's what I've loved from this past year:

Newbies | The Gifted, Doctor Who, The Defenders, The Punisher,  The Handmaid’s Tale, 13 Reason’s Why, Big Little Lies
Oldies that are still awesome | Grey’s Anatomy, Game of Thrones, Stranger Things, The Crown
Over but not forgotten | Broadchurch, Orphan Black, Inuyasha

Top Movies
Pretty much every time I went to the movie theatre this year it was to watch a superhero movie and I have absolutely no complaints about that. I do feel like I went to the theatre more but I didn't watch as many new movies from the comfort of my couch (I definitely re-watched a lot of my old favorites). But here are the movies I enjoyed most from 2017:

La La Land • This was my first movie of the year! I watched it with Carina during our Disney World trip and we both loved it. It's not perfect but we were so charmed by Gosling and Stone, the music and we were huge fans of how it ended.

Wonder Woman • Gal Gadot IS Wonder Woman. I loved the story, how the Amazons were depicted (Antiope is fierce!) and of course, the Woman herself.

Thor: Ragnarok • I genuinely enjoy the Thor movies but I can't deny that Chris Hemsworth is a huge part of the reason why. Again, I loved the journey and the characters (Valkyrie!) but my one complaint was the forced humor. Otherwise, Thor and Hulk teaming up was gold.

Murder on the Orient Express • I recently re-read the book a few months ago before I even knew about the movie adaptation coming out. I thought that would make me more critical but I thought the movie did a wonderful job.

Spider-Man: Homecoming • This is the best Spider-man movie ever. It actually shows him as a teenager and acting like one while figuring who he wants to be and how best to use his abilities. Plus Tom Holland is adorable.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi • OMG, I LOVED THIS MOVIE SO MUCH. Hands down my #1 favorite movie of the year. And that's all I'm going to say about that.

Lion • This came out last year but I finally watched it this month and it's such a moving, heartwarming story. I can't believe I waited this long to see it!

  1. Paramore is also probably one of my most listened to bands of this year. I loved their new album and how bubbly and summery it feels on the surface whilst also dealing with more emotional stuff.

I've yet to see La La Land but I need to because I'm a low key musicals nerd. Wonder Woman was utterly badass and Thor Ragnarok was so funny! I was also a big fan of how young and fresh Spiderman Homecoming was. But The Last Jedi might have to be my favourite movie of the year too. I avoided spoilers as best I could and it piad off because I had no idea what to expect. It had the perfect balance of emotion and humour and action and I adore these characters to pieces.

    Great list!

  2. My Mom and I watched the first episode of The Gifted and really enjoyed it! We have the rest of the episodes on DVR and we want to catch up soon with it. I really want to watch The Last Jedi! It looks amazing and I keep hearing great things about it! :)

  3. Wonder Woman! Thor: Ragnarok! Both of those movies are so, so good, and I'm always happy to rewatch bits and pieces of them whenever I get the chance up until this day.
